We are now offering the "Puzzle Clock" made from imported Russian five-ply, marine grade, Baltic Birch. Our Puzzle Clock on this page is laser-cut from the finest of woods available, just as our other kits are.
This clock is most interesting in that it pre-dates the pendulum clocks by about 300 years. These clocks operate with what we call "a verge and foliot." Essentially, the top horizontal bar moves left and then right, suspended by a thin cord. The pallet engages the escape wheel while the bar turns back and forth and the escape gear is turned in one second intervals. The original verge and foliot clocks were not very accurate. In fact, many earlier versions of this clock had only an hour hand!
This is the very same clock as our Puzzle Clock made from industrial MDF 28% wood-resin-composite board. (Shown on the index page (MDF Compressed board is stronger than nearly all woods!). The real difference is the beautiful Baltic Birch wood and the way the wood finishes. I love the MDF puzzle clock shown on the index page, but it's painted black and gold -- very beautiful, to be sure, and I am proud to have it in my living room, but MDF wood does not stain or varnish as beautifully as Baltic Birch.
Well, things do change! This clock is now extremely accurate because of Joe Monincx, who has hand-crafted each of his clocks since 1971. He made this clock revolutionary by using not one, but two escape wheels. This changed everything! The Puzzle version of this antique clock is as accurate as any wooden clock ever made. This picture of the Puzzle Clock was taken in his living room. Next to his Puzzle Clock is an "Atomic" clock that is radio controlled. Each day that he winds it, the Puzzle Clock is never a full minute off from the radio controlled clock! Really! If he gives The Puzzle Clock another day to make up the slight difference of the atomic clock, many times it "corrects" itself! Fun stuff! With this high-grade, hand selected, Baltic Birch you can use virtually any stain or varnish and end up with an extremely beautiful clock! You can see this by the picture above. It was finished in natural colors, and it's just a shame I cannot show you the true beauty of this finished wood clock in real life!

With this kit, there is no gluing, no nails, no cutting, no dowels to buy and no tools are needed!
Can you believe it? No gluing, no nails? The clock pieces fit together with extreme precision. This kit is that well designed and cut (This one is laser cut!). The kit instructions are step by step and nicely detailed. Most people find this kit very relaxing to assemble. It is truly a pleasure to own this completed clock kit. Conversation piece? Absolutely! I think you will find that some people enjoy the antiquity of this clock over the pendulum clocks.

This clock is more money than the MDF wood-compressed version offered on the index page, simply because it is laser cut and the Baltic Birch wood is first-grade and hand selected. Please keep in mind, it is the very same clock, same accuracy, same everything -- just the wood is different! And if you look at the picture above, it's also a very beautiful clock. It simply boils down to the old saying, "It's really a personal thing!"
Personal note: I love all of the clocks we offer, I truly do. They are all so different and so beautiful in their own way. What I can tell you about this clock is that it is possibly the most "hypnotic" clock I have ever seen! The Verge and Foliot were 300 years prior to the pendulum clocks, and people cannot "just walk by" this beautiful clock -- they stop and look, sometimes for a very long time! Now this clock is as accurate as any pendulum clock ever made, thanks to a genius Canadian woodworker named Joe Monincx! This clock is a lot of fun to build and I feel it is an inspiration to woodworkers and clock builders all over the world! It's a shame this clock wasn't offered during the 14th century where its most basic design comes from.
Bonus: These kits come with beautiful brass colored steel weights and winding cord! We do not have an instructional VHS video of this clock, only a nicely made, step-by-step instructional DVD that is very easy to follow. The instructions are very concise for constructing this delightful and beautiful clock kit.

The gold colored steel weights are included in all our Puzzle Clock Kits.
